Kristen was born in Edmonton, Alberta and is a member of the Sucker Creek Band. She became a BladeRunner in June 2009. Before BladeRunners, she had been living in Port Alberni for several years as a single mom on income assistance and with no recent attachment to employment. Kristen had completed a first year automotive apprenticeship training program and wanted to become an automotive mechanic, but despite her efforts, she could not find work.
Kristen wanted to become a BladeRunner so that she could get some hands on construction experience, go through the life skills training and get some support and motivation. During the BladeRunner program training, Kristen learned how to use power tools and how to work safely on a worksite. She also learned several things about herself; for example, she doesn’t like conflict and she is shy. She also learned how to work in a team. Kristen says BladeRunners gave her confidence and more experience with tools and that helped her with product knowledge. She is currently working in the retail industry and has been with the same company for almost a year.
“I have seen many employees come and go, but I am still here because I get the job done and I always try to do things right the first time and do more than I am expected to do.”
