Carl
Carl

Carl is a very real success. He entered NYSA’s BladeRunners program from October 26, 2009 to March 19, 2010. He is 23 years old and describes himself as someone who did not complete high school, has had drug issues and has been clean for four months. Carl has low levels of literacy and numeracy, had past contact with the justice system, was street involved and at risk of becoming homeless. He identified himself as having a lack of social and family supports as he is new resident to Nanaimo. He also felt that he lacked self-management and behaviour management skills.

Carl attended all training components and he received all the health and safety training certificates offered during the program. He completed his work experience at Island Pallet Solutions and was hired on with a wage subsidy component. He worked there continuously until March 5 when he decided to change employment for higher wages. He obtained employment with Emterra Environmental where he stayed until the program ended. Both employers were very happy with his work and NYSA feels that he has been successful in his transition to work.

“BladeRunners was and is a great experience to have been through. Thanks again and very much appreciated.”

Noah
Noah

Noah was struggling with past addictions issues and was at risk of becoming homeless when he entered the NYSA BladeRunners program in October 2009. He self reported that he had a grade 10 level education and had literacy and numeracy barriers. Despite having very little work experience or education, he excelled while in the skill enhancement component of the training. Noah attended and completed the entire skill enhancement portion of the program and was placed with RGL Construction.

He has not looked back since. Noah is confident in his job due to the skills he learned through BladeRunners and the employer is also very impressed with Noah’s work ethic and abilities and plans to keep Noah on for the long-term.

“The Nanaimo Youth Services BladeRunners program has helped me believe in myself. Before…I was two steps from being homeless and struggling in my recovery from drugs and alcohol. Through some of the different facilitators and workshops, I have gained the insight that I am capable of realizing my dreams.”
